Accolades to remain open

Visiting the TRU campus Monday are Taffeta and Braden Fitterer as they look at the cafeteria and Accolades Restaurant in the Culinary Arts Building.

News that Accolades dining room is closing its doors is premature, a Thompson Rivers University spokeswoman said Monday.

Due to budget constraints, discussions continue about the various options related to TRU's Culinary Arts program and it's connected operations, including the student-run restaurant, said Diana Skoglund.

"The plan is to have an alternative plan in place by the fall semester of 2014," she said.

Even if TRU were to alter any aspect of Accolades' operation, students in the Professional Cook 2 program will be fully accommodated to meet their training needs, said Skoglund.

She said budgetary pressures related to the culinary program are one example of the fiscal challenges the university faces. For 2013 and the next two years, TRU will reduce operating costs by 5.1 per cent to compensate.

Accolades has been recognized by Where To Eat In Canada, an independent, national restaurant guide.
