Cross-country skiers will hit the tracks Saturday at Stake Lake, marking an early opening for the Overlander Ski Club.
Director Dwayne Geiger said trails at Lac Le Jeune need more snow but it is nonetheless an early opening for the volunteer club.
Groomers worked on trails Thursday evening in preparation for the Saturday opening and more snow is in the forecast for today and Saturday.
New this year at Stake Lake is completion of about 2.5 kilometres of lighting, between the cabin at head of the trails and the stadium area. Night skiing will be available Wednesday evenings and one other night each week that is yet to be determined.
“The last couple years night skiing has been huge.”
The club is chasing fund to extend lighting completely around the lake, something Geiger said may occur within the next two to three years.
The club’s ski league and lessons begins Jan. 2. New this year is dedicated coach Chris Werrell, a world cup competitor.
