    Skiing opens Saturday

Cross-country skiers will hit the tracks Saturday at Stake Lake, marking an early opening for the Overlander Ski Club.

Director Dwayne Geiger said trails at Lac Le Jeune need more snow but it is nonetheless an early opening for the volunteer club.

Groomers worked on trails Thursday evening in preparation for the Saturday opening and more snow is in the forecast for today and Saturday.

New this year at Stake Lake is completion of about 2.5 kilometres of lighting, between the cabin at head of the trails and the stadium area. Night skiing will be available Wednesday evenings and one other night each week that is yet to be determined.

“The last couple years night skiing has been huge.”

The club is chasing fund to extend lighting completely around the lake, something Geiger said may occur within the next two to three years.

The club’s ski league and lessons begins Jan. 2. New this year is dedicated coach Chris Werrell, a world cup competitor.

    Flipper says...

    Attention: Greg Drinnan, Sports Editor
    ***************************************
Tonight's 7-0 loss to the much better Tri-City Americans team is another nail in the coffin for the Blazers hopes of securing a playoff spot at the end of this season...what else is new, eh? The team played their rare "A" game against Edmonton Wednesday night and their more-often-than-not "B" game tonight!

When are our 'kids' going to learn that we can't compete if we're in the penalty box...and as we all know, the Blazers are the most penalized team in this 22-team Western Hockey League. That statistic in itself should be major embarrassment to each and every player on the Kamloops Blazers roster.

As for the officiating tonight, two number 39's were like Bonnie and Clyde the way they saw this nights game...would the real referee, Bonnet, please stand up?? And just who are these two duds (no, not dudes) anyway??

My comments as a long time seasons ticket holder are for your eyes, Greg, and to use bits and pieces for your post-game column if you so desire...but please leave my name out of your column...I am just one of many disgruntled, but very loyal, hometown fans.

As a courtesy to you, I sign my real name and e-mail address! (No reply is necessary...)

    Cheers!
