Sa-Hali runs the table in AA basketball

Taiysa Worsfold had a monster game to lead the Sa-Hali Sabres into the provincial AA girls basketball championship.

Worsfold had 45 points — 24 of them coming on three-pointers — as the Sabres beat the Brocklehurst Broncs 74-56 in the West Zone final at Brock on Saturday.

Sa-Hali earned the host berth at provincials, Feb. 24-27 at the Tournament Capital Centre. The Sabres, Broncs and NorKam Saints have qualified for the Okanagan championship starting Thursday in Summerland. The top two teams — aside from Sa-Hali — at Okanagans will go to provincials, while the third-place team will have a play-in game against a Fraser Valley team.

If the Grade 11 Worsfold plays like she did Saturday, the Sabres, who are ranked No. 7 in the province, should do well at provincials.

“She was phenomenal,” said Broncs head coach Lindsey Karpluk.

Karpluk said Worsfold drew a bunch of foul shots by penetrating in the first quarter — she went 6-for-9 in the period — so Brock backed off. Then Worsfold started draining threes.

“There was nothing we could do,” Karpluk said.

Worsfold was named tournament MVP, and Taylor Wale, who had 11 points for the winners in the final, was a tournament all-star. Brock’s Hannah Ambler had 19 points in the final and also was a tournament all-star, along with teammate Erika Gardham.

The Saints beat the Westsyde Whundas 57-45 in the third-place game. NorKam was led by Kelly Moore’s 14 points and all-star Carly Lovell’s 12. Danielle Wiesner scored 11 points for the Whundas, whose all-star was Taylor Miller.

The Sabres clinched the host spot at the provincial senior AA boys basketball championship Saturday.

The Sabres, who are ranked No. 10 in the province, beat the Valleyview Vikings 75-28 in the West Zone final. The West Zone champion gets the host berth at provincials, which run Feb. 24-27 at the Tournament Capital Centre.

The Sabres, Vikings and NorKam Saints, who finished third, have qualified for the Okanagan championship, which starts Thursday at a yet-to-be-determined location.

Sa-Hali is the lone Okanagan team in the provincial rankings, although the Vernon-Clarence Fulton Maroons and the Oliver-Southern Okanagan Hornets, who won provincials last season, are honourable mentions.

The Vikings upset the Saints 55-52 in a Friday semifinal. The Sabres beat the Westsyde Whundas 88-50 in the other semifinal.

NorKam beat the Whundas 82-79 in the third-place game.

The Vikings beat NorKam 79-54 in a consolation game. Farber had 29 points, Walker scored 20 and Alex Saayman added 10.
