Re: Minister Penner’s Letter – The Daily News, Feb 27, Permit Not Political Decision
Most of the minister’s letter deals with air emissions. It does not address whatsoever
other important issues; toxic creosote on the ground near the river, incinerating other unidentified compounds (from railway operations) on/in the ties, air born materials, waste disposal, fire hazard, town stigma, etc, etc.
Kamloops council unanimously agreed, and almost all residents have spoken loudly
against this. I believe the role of government is to listen and respect us – that is why we pay taxes. The community is strongly opposed – can’t they hear us ?
The minister states that the decision is not political, but rests solely with ministry staff in Kamloops. What he does not say is that they must follow and adhere to government direction and policy. I have no doubt that the minister and/or his government can intervene.
As a long-time resident, and with respect, I ask that Minister Penner:
1. Explain to the residents of Kamloops and area why it is a good idea to approve
an unproven toxic processing facility near the core of a large urban area, instead of a more remote location; and
2. Invite this proponent to establish such a facility in the core of his hometown of Chilliwack. If he agrees, please do it soon, because Kamloops residents clearly do not want it.
