City Council will review the idea of a multi-use playing field in Grand Forks in April it was decided at Monday night’s meeting.
However, the proposed soccer/rugby field will not be ready for this playing season, which starts on June 1.
Coun. Joy Davies, proposed that council partner with the school district on the project to create a field at Grand Forks Secondary School. However, Coun. Christine Thompson advised keeping options open until more information is available.
For example, Thompson said she’d like to find out if the school board would allow teams to hold beer gardens as fundraisers.
“The decision that we have to make, we have to make for the benefit of the community as a whole,” she said. “If we have an opportunity to maximize the funds available to us by entering into a partnership with School District 51, then we need to investigate that.”
Coun. Chris Moslin said he wanted more information from staff, including the cost of turning the City Park field into a level playing field and the cost of using other city-owned fields in the community.
Public Works Manager Wayne Kopan is on holiday and has been unable to provide some of the information council has requested.
Michael Wirischagin voted against the motion.
“All I want to say is that we need to move forward with this at some point,” he said. “I think it’s unfair to the real people involved with this.”
Coun. Gene Robert said he was opposed to the decision at the last meeting to rescind an earlier decision to locate the field at City Park.
The matter will be discussed at the April 6 meeting.
