The Grand Forks Curling Club held their annual Awards Banquet last Saturday. Trophies to the League winners, along with a few individual honours were presented.
For the second year in a row Paul Plamondon and his team of Patrick Campbell, Hector Zammit and Vince Bron topped the standings in the Tuesday/Thursday Men’s League. The Wednesday Women’s trophy was captured by the team of Erinn Bartlett, Kelly Ludwar, Mackenzie Field and Kim Lacey.
The Friday Mixed League featured 16 teams this season, and after the wins and losses were tallied it was the Mel Lungle foursome in first place. Supporting Mel were May Lungle and Larry and Pat Ballard. The Ian Mitchell rink was selected as the Most Improved team with individual awards for Most Improved curlers going to Nigel James and Edie Faulkner.
The Tuesday afternoon Mixed League ran two separate round robin schedules with the Betty Lockhart team of John Seminoff, Deb Steadman and Paul Lewis coming out on top in the spring segment while Jack Fennel and his squad of Irene Arnott, Ed Watamaniuk and Lyn Mackey led the standings in the fall. The Thursday afternoon Women’s League also divided their season. In the fall, Cris Campbell skipped her team to first place. Also on the team were Carol McGowan, Deb Steadman and Mari Catalano. The spring round robin was won by Jan Lavergne, Leslie Matheson, Pam Macgregor and Lynn Minifie.
The very active Retirees League curls Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The trophy for the first half winners went to the Dalton Fraser team and the Paul Plamondon foursome led the way in the second half.
Volunteers are recognized annually for their personal contributions and commitments in serving the approximately 200 members who are part of Curl Grand Forks. Lynn Minifie and Guy Dubeault were honoured as the 2009-10 Volunteers of the Year. They will have their names inscribed on the special volunteer plaque and will receive official certificates from Curl BC, the governing body of curling in the province.
The final presentation of the night was the Most Valuable Person for the Past. This award recognizes an individual who has displayed extraordinary service to their fellow curlers and the sport of curling in Grand Forks. This year’s recipient is Mel Lungle.
