Summit costs more than money

Editor’s Notebook

I’m completely baffled by the news coming out of of Ontario these days. In preparation for the G8/G20 conference it seems as though the proletariat, those who wander around making a living and paying taxes, just aren’t as important as the muckety-mucks who will be descending on Toronto, and then Huntsville, to sleep for a few days in a very costly “security perimeter.”

And what will this security cost the public? A mere $1 billion spent by a government that’s been crying poor since the global financial collapse and beyond. But this event will cost much more than money.

Every time I read the news I feel like I’m reading the chapters that were edited out of George Orwell’s 1984 for being too far fetched.

When did protesting become illegal in Canada? I’m just asking because back when I went to university it was practically a national sport.

However, since then the word protester seems to have gotten confused with the word threat to national security. Oh yeah, and if you happen to be an innocent bystander wandering past one of these unlawful assemblies, you too can be subject to the kind of crowd control procedures that are especially designed to trample human rights. The Toronto police have just purchased a sonic cannon capable of permanently damaging hearing.

Last week I read about the concrete and wire fence being dumped right smack down in the middle of downtown Toronto in the middle of the tourism season, impacting businesses, residents and anyone else who has reason to visit the area.

Want to sell anything other than cigarettes and coffee to high-strung security guards? Sorry, your high rent postal code suddenly depreciated. Want to call the boss because you’ve been hung up at the security perimeter that descended around your posh downtown condo? Well, your call is probably going to be blocked by cellphone jammers.

Conservatives say the cost is worth it to showcase our country on the world stage. (Ah yes, our beautiful fake lake.) However, it’s time these world leaders learned to teleconference because the citizens are soon going to be sick of picking up the tab.
