Re: Naturalist Says Grass-fed the Way, The Daily News, June 11.
While we are pleased that grasslands, cattle and ranching are in the news, we must correct a couple of statements in the article on Trevor Herriot on June 11.
It was implied that Mr. Herriot said that cattle have a negative impact on grassland birds. Mr. Herriot has refuted that he made such a statement. In fact, when he spoke in Kamloops at our Grasslands Celebration, he emphasized the need for a healthy ranching industry and rangelands to ensure habitat for birds and other grassland animals remains available. But to maintain healthy grasslands, ranches must be economically healthy. Along with other ideas, Mr. Herriot proposed the development of a certification program for grass-fed beef as one option in which we can all contribute to healthy ranches.
Further, while the Grasslands Conservation Council of B.C. very much supports the B.C. cattle industry and works closely with many ranchers and range managers, our base of support extends into all areas of society. Just as grasslands support numerous and diverse uses, for both humans and animals alike, the GCC works with a wide range of groups and individuals to ensure that grasslands continue to be here for all of us to use and enjoy responsibly.
