26 people and four dogs took up the challenge to hike to the star on Observation Mountain as a celebration of Canada Day.
It was a mixed group of youth, experienced hikers and first-timers, who met at Barbara Ann Park, and then set off through the meadow to start the climb to the top of the mountain.
We chatted and encouraged each other, admired the wild flowers and scenery and then, suddenly, we were out of the trees and could see the top.
In places, the hike had its challenges, but everyone made it and was justifiably proud of their determination and achievement.
After wandering around the peak area and taking in the 360 degree views, we gathered around the Canadian flag, proudly held by Jacob and Shawn, to sing a heartfelt O Canada while viewing with pride our beautiful valley.
It was a moment to reflect on our good fortune. Some mentioned that this gave our prayerful anthem an added dimension as we asked that our land be kept “glorious and free.”
In our hearts we gave thanks to those who strive daily to ensure that our nation remains a place of safety and opportunity, never forgetting our responsibilities that come with this freedom.
All agreed this was a special way to celebrate our nation’s birthday and would recommend it to friends as a good way to kick-off the Canada Day festivities.
Next year there’ll be two starting points, one at Barbara Ann Park and the other at Copper Ridge where the climb is less arduous. Why not give it a try?
As a final note, there is a hiking group that meets each Wednesday and Saturday at the northeast corner of the Recreation Centre parking lot.
