A Kamloops rancher facing trial in September for cruelty to animals has been formally charged with breaching her bail conditions.
Marcie Moriarty, B.C. SPCA general manager of cruelty investigations, said Carol Haughton has been charged with three counts of breaching the bail conditions set while she was awaiting trial.
“She still has the animals,” said Moriarty.
When SPCA inspectors went to Haughton’s Knutsford property in late June, they found a pregnant female dog and other males being housed with females of breeding age. She was also supposed to have sold off puppies that were still living on the ranch.
SPCA inspectors also found a black and white Great Dane named Hugo who was in poor physical condition, with his ribs and hip bones protruding.
Haughton was also ordered to clean up dirty areas where the animals were being kept, provide drinking water, remove objects that could injure animals from their living area and separate male and female dogs.
The case began last summer, when Haughton was charged with cruelty to animals and the SPCA seized 26 Great Danes and six cats from the property under allegations their living conditions were awful.
Haughton has since appealed the removal and got the animals back in April, under strict conditions that included no breeding. Her case on the cruelty charges has started and is set to continue in September.
Moriarty said the charges of breaching her orders will go to trial in February, 2011.
Haughton was jailed for several hours on July 9, when she was released on bail and given new terms regarding care of her animals.
Moriarty said the animals are still at the Knutsford ranch, and the SPCA will continue to monitor their living conditions.
“We’ve reissued orders and follow up to determine whether she’s complied,” she said.
“It’s not charges of animal cruelty, it’s charges related to her bail conditions.”
