Trail RCMP is dropping its investigation of a woman who was reportedly going door-to-door fraudulently collecting money on behalf of two local women suffering kidney disease.
“It’s not a fraudulent case – one person was collecting for one recipient with good intentions and now it’s being resolved,” said Sgt. Rob Hawton on Monday. “Through word-of-mouth it got back that the person was collecting for both of them.”
Linda Radtke, coordinator of Kate’s Kitchen, and Teresa Lucas, owner of Lil T’s Café, first heard the news about a month ago that a woman was allegedly using their names to gather donations.
Lucas found out from a respected client about the situation and Radtke says she asked the woman to stop collecting on her behalf after receiving an initial $60 donation from her.
Police say that the woman has agreed to return all donations to the appropriate donors as a way of mending the misunderstanding.
But Lucas is having a hard time swallowing this conclusion.
“It’s just opened another can of worms,” she said Monday. “She’s making less of what it is and I think what she did was unacceptable.”
Radtke was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2008 and undergoes dialysis three times a week while Lucas is due for a kidney transplant in September.
“We did absolutely nothing wrong,” said Lucas, who feels like the blame has shifted. “She took our names and our credibility. And what is she getting for it? A slap on the wrist.”
