Local boxers off to Canada Winter Games camp

Members of the Cranbrook Eagles Boxing club are off to Kelowna next week in the first step towards making Team B.C. for the Canada Winter Games.

Coach Bill Watson will be escorting Colin Adams, Taite Stober and Brad Hystad to the training camp.

Attendance at one of these camps is mandatory for any athletes wishing to make the provincial team, which will travel to Halifax in February.

Hystad will be at the camp for the experience alone as he’s too young to compete, but Watson said Adams and Stober have very good shots at making the team later on.

The athletes will be exposed to a plethora of experts, including strength and conditioning coaches, a nutritionist, and sports-specific coaches like Watson.

“They have workshops as well. It’s going to be good for the boys to learn technical abilities,” said Watson.

One element of interest will be tips on fighting within the context of a computer scoring system.

“With five judges placed around the ring, there are actually spots in the ring that can make you more visible, for your blows to be seen from the majority of judges,” noted Watson.

Eagles’ classes start up again in a few weeks, and Watson said there’s a chance the trio who are heading to the Winter Games camp will also get a chance to box at a card in Spokane in mid-September.

The Eagles are holding registration starting 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at their club in the basement at 16-11th Avenue South.

Adult classes begin the next night, and junior sessions begin that Thursday.
