    Theatre, arts stalwart moving on

A longtime player behind the scenes with Western Canada Theatre, Project X and more recently with the symphony, is leaving Kamloops.

Samantha MacDonald has accepted a position as artistic producer of Theatre North West in Prince George.

“It is northern B.C.’s answer to Western Canada Theatre,” she said of the career move Wednesday. “Its budget is only slightly smaller.”

Associated with WCT for 20 years on and off, MacDonald said she is sad to be leaving Kamloops but “stoked” to be heading north for a more senior arts position.

“I’m going to miss the KSO as well,” she said. She has worked as the symphony’s administrative director for the past two years.

She is also a co-founder and co-artistic director of Project X Theatre Productions, which has enriched the city stage with X Fest and winter programs over the past six years. A dedicated thespian, MacDonald worked as a theatre technician, designer, stage manager, actor and publicist before progressing to her strongest passion, directing, with X Fest.

“We are thrilled with the opportunity Samantha has been given with Theatre North West in Prince George,” said Derek Rein, fellow artistic director. “She is irreplaceable in the eyes of Project X Theatre, and she will be greatly missed amongst us and amongst the entire arts community in Kamloops.”

MacDonald takes up her new duties Sept. 15.
