Here are two words to RCMP – thank you

There have been numerous letters in the past few weeks slamming the men and women entrusted to keep our city safe. I think this is disgraceful!

I can’t imagine going to work each day knowing that I was about to put myself in the line of fire for someone else, let alone knowing that I would be the target of public ridicule and anger as a result and not be able to publicly defend my actions.

If you break the law, you run the risk of an encounter with the RCMP. If you endanger their lives during such an encounter, they are forced to act quickly and, sometimes, with deadly force. There is a solution to this – don’t break the law.

I’ve read that people have broken the law, be it speeding or dangerous driving or worse, and are surprised when the responding officer doesn’t apologize to them. YOU BROKE THE LAW!

I read about Mr. Taylor watching the RCMP drive past the woman with her car’s hood up, “obviously broken down,” not damaged in an accident. Why would the member stop? The RCMP members are not auto mechanics or BCAA.

Give me a break! I was recently involved in an emergency situation that required the response of the RCMP. I found the members I interacted with to be both polite and professional. Perhaps if people want to be treated with respect by the RCMP, they should be respectful to the RCMP. Remember, for every one incident that is sensationalized by the media, there are hundreds of situations attended to and resolved by the RCMP that we don’t hear about. Two words come to mind when I see members of the RCMP – thank you!
