The Kimberley Dynamiters didn’t have much trouble in their first KIJHL exhibition game last night, dumping the visiting Fernie Ghostriders 8-2.
As expected, Fernie iced a very young team, and Nitros’ coach Garry Jacklin said his staff was just happy Kimberley’s players worked hard.
“That’s what we asked of them; we didn’t really care what the score was going to be,” he said. “We just wanted to show that we’re going to be a team that works hard, takes the body. If somebody (beats us), fine, but we’re not going to get outworked.”
Returning players Brennan Foreman and Mike Nelson led the way, each potting two goals.
“This is the type of game they’ll like to play: there’s lots of banging and crashing and they have to get involved,” said Jacklin. “The puck comes to them and they can both shoot... I don’t think they realize they like to play that game; it’s physical, it’s going to take a lot of hard work on their part but if they commit we will have a good hockey team.”
Soren Hall had a goal and an assist, while Kristian Petit, Casey Hanemayer and Rylan Duley had a goal each.
Dany Oslund, Ryan Midtdal and Alex Hall each had two helpers.
Wes McLeod and Justin Spring shared goaltending duties. Neither of them faced much rubber and both let in a goal within a minute of taking to the crease, but both shut the door from then out.
Jacklin said they are happy with both netminders.
“It’s a toss-up, and we’ve got to get down to some brass tacks on those goaltenders,” he said. “You’re keeping kids around and they want to get a decision. We need to make a decision too. We like both of them, but only one of them can stay. We’ll see what happens.”
The Nitros were set to release more players late last night.
“I’ve got seven guys sitting out that are going to be on our hockey team and guys are still coming from junior A,” said Jacklin. “I had to play the guys I had to play so that I could see what we’ve got.”
