Let's fill the Kimberley Food Bank

With cold weather coming and Halloween just around the corner, the Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank is gearing up for the busy Christmas season.

That effort will be aided this year by a national campaign sponsored by Shaw Cable and Campbell's Foods. With a promise to match the weight of every food donation to your local food bank with a donation of the same weight in Campbell's products, food banks can double their food donations this fall.

That means when Kimberley kids come knocking on your door this Saturday with their Halloween for Hunger campaign, you have an opportunity to provide twice as much food.

"We weigh the food donated, take pictures of the donors, in this case the Halloween for Hunger kids and report it to Shaw, who then report it to Campbells. Campbells then matches it in pounds of Cambpell products," said Food Bank director Malcolm Fruin. "Anything you give this Saturday, October 30 will be doubled."

Having just compiled their year end statistics - (the Food Bank's fiscal year runs October to October) -- it is definitely apparent that the Food Bank had another busy year.

998 regular hampers, feeding 1,356 adults and 1,022 children for a total of 2,378 people, were dispensed in 2010 at a total cost of $162,137.52.

In addition 430 emergency hampers were distributed, feeding 624 adults and 461 children for a total of 1,085 hampers. Those hampers came to a total of $27,833.24.

With that kind of quantity going out of the Food Bank, every donation is more than welcome.
