WolfPack wins season-high fourth game

The TRU WolfPack women's basketball team set a franchise single-season record Saturday as it won its fourth game of the season.

The WolfPack beat the Trinity Western Spartans 75-49 at the Tournament Capital Centre to improve its Canada West record to 4-2. The WolfPack, in its sixth season of CIS competition, has never before won as many as four games in a season.

The WolfPack has gone 3-20 in each of its last two seasons.

"It is nice to get the wins," said TRU head coach Scott Reeves in a news release. He is into his fifth year with the program. "We shot the ball better and our team defence and individual play stepped up. We did a good job on their penetration. They tried to drive to the basket and we were either there a little late for a foul or totally stopped them."

A 10-0 run early in the game allowed TRU to lead 20-11 after the first quarter. At one point in the second quarter, TRU was ahead 40-16.

"I think what is happening is that our program is maturing," Reeves said. "We have a lot of young players who now have some experience and they are learning how to finish games. It is a rarity to see us up by 20 or 15 points."

Diane Schuetze, a third-year post from Vernon, led the WolfPack with 15 points and seven rebounds.

"Diane is rebounding the ball very well and is getting inside position," Reeves said. "She has definitely come on. I have seen that over the last couple of weeks. She jumps for rebounds, she is finishing shots under major duress and pressure.

"Diane is drawing a lot of attention from other teams and is sometimes pushed off the block and she still continues to finish. She is coming into her own."

Jen Ju, a third-year guard from Vancouver, had 17 points and seven rebounds, while fourth-year guard Kaitlyn Widsten of Tsawwassen added 15 points.

Strangely, TRU held a 40-23 rebounding edge at the half, but ended up losing the battle of the boards, 45-41.

The Spartans (1-5) got 10 points from each of Corina Reimer and Holly Strom.

The WolfPack will play the Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg on Friday and Saturday.
