The City of Cranbrook will enter into a two year agreement with the B.C. SPCA for management of unclaimed animals.
The contract provides $15,000 per year plus annual cost of living increase based on the Consumer Price Index. That amount is offset by reduced costs to City as it won't have to dispose of unclaimed animals by euthanasia and reduced kenneling and supplies for keeping unclaimed animals. It also results in increased revenue to the City from licensing of animals by the SPCA as a condition of adoption.
Since September 2004 the City has utilized the services of the B.C. SPCA to managed unclaimed animals as part of its animal control operations. According to a report recommendation to Council the agreement has worked effectively and has enabled the adoption of unclaimed animals from the City's pound through the East Kootenay SPCA.
Some benefits of the agreement include more humane treatment of unclaimed animals through better kenneling care, adoption and relocation services, reduced costs for the extended care of animals after the five-day holding period at the City pound and increased licensing of unclaimed and unlicensed animals.
