City to host another Masters event

While Kamloops lost its bid this fall to host the Canada Winter Games, it announced a consolation prize Monday - the 2011 Canadian Indoors Masters Championships.

The national track and field event for athletes 35 and up is a direct spinoff from last spring's World Masters Indoor Athletic Championships, also held at the Tournament Capital Centre. More than 1,500 athletes competed in that event.

The Canadian Masters championships, which have been in hiatus for years, are being revived because the Kamloops Track and Field Club agreed to host them.

"With the amazing performance of Kamloops in hosting the 2010 World Masters Indoor Championships, we are confident that Kamloops will once again deliver a great event," said Paul Osland, president of the CMAA.

"The World Masters shone a bright light on Kamloops and what it can do with indoor athletic events," said Mayor Peter Milobar.

The national event takes place March 19-20, 2011.
