The TRU WolfPack men’s basketball team has signed its ninth recruit for the 2011-12 Canada West season.
TRU announced Wednesday that Akeem Pierre, a 20-year-old guard, will be transferring to the WolfPack after spending three seasons with the UBC Thunderbirds.
Pierre red-shirted due to injury last season, after averaging five minutes per game in 2009-10.
The 5-foot-11 Pierre played high school for the Richmond-R.C. Palmer Griffins, and got in touch with TRU head coach Scott Clark at the end of last season.
“He indicated to UBC that he wasn’t going to return,” Clark said in a press release. “I have known Akeem since he was in Grade 9 and I ran the Regional Training Center on the Lower Mainland.”
TRU also has signed guards Zach Usherwood, Justin King, Mike Zayas and Derek Wolf and forwards Blaz and Ivan Bozinovic, both from Kamloops, Richard Bos and Will Ondrik.
“I am excited to turn it all around,” Pierre said in a press release. “I feel we are putting pieces together to be really competitive and surprise people. It’s going to be tough but so will we.”

Former TRU men’s volleyball player Gord Perrin has signed a contract with a professional team in Turkey.
Perrin, who played at TRU from 2008-10, has signed a two-year deal with Arkas. The Creston spent last season at the National Training Centre in Gatineau, Que.
Arkas finished second in the Turkish league last season, and also competes in the Champions Pro European League. It plays its home games in Izmir, the hometown of Perrin’s former teammate, Behlul Yavasgel, now a WolfPack assistant coach.
Perrin, who will join former Winnipeg Wesmen middle Justin Duff with Arkas, is the third former WolfPack player to hit the professional ranks — Tony Zylstra, a middle who graduated in 2008, spent last season in Norway, while outside hitter Josh Boruck, who left TRU in 2009, was with Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel.
