Elite drop home closer 7-3

This past weekend did not go as planned for the Cranbrook Elite.

The Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League club forfeited a game in Medicine Hat on Saturday when they weren't able to get enough healthy players.

On Sunday afternoon, they lost 7-3 to the Calgary Sabrecats when they couldn't get enough players pulling in the same direction.

"The most disappointing part of the game (Sunday) was this was a game we could have easily won," said head coach Ron Miles. "They were going back to shooting from the outside, they're doing it all one-on-one. When they moved the ball they had good scoring opportunities, but it was a little too late."

Goalie Morgan Brown was able to go between the pipes, allowing emergency backup Josh Prasad to man the door at the bench. Brown kept Calgary to fewer than 10 goals, but his teammates couldn't respond for what would have been their second win.

"It's frustrating because in practice they're moving the ball well and they're doing what they should be," said Miles. "Last weekend they were doing that. They put in a much better performance last weekend and that would have been enough to beat this team (Sunday)."

Calgary took a 2-0 lead into the second period, but gave Cranbrook a window to crawl back into the game when they took a pair of penalties just before the mid-way point.

They scored twice with the advantage. Tanner Rennich ripped one home while the Elite were up two men. Seventeen seconds later, Mackenzie Miles followed up with a crafty play on which the initial shot hit the glass behind the net and bounced out to him at the far post.

"He said he put his foot down to try and trap the ball, and it went off his foot and into the net. It wasn't directing it, so it's a goal," said coach Miles. "It's probably one of the more obscure lacrosse goals I've seen in a long time, but we'll take it even though it was only one of three that we had. It was one of those nights where we needed something like that to make it happen."

Cranbrook got another extended 5-on-3 later in the period but couldn't convert. Then Rob Murray took a major for checking from behind, and Calgary scored twice.

"He's one of our better players, and missing him in the lineup on top of our other guys who couldn't finish the game, I was really disappointed in that," said Miles.

After the Sabrecats made it 5-2, Elite captain Mike Nelson scored with a low shot on the power play to get his team as close as they would get.

Miles said his players' heads weren't in the game.

"They were busy yelling at each other, the refs, the other team; looking in the stands and yelling at people in the stands," he said. "There was no focus at all, and I yelled at them about that."

It marked the team's final home game of the season. They wrap things up next weekend in Calgary.

Their penultimate road trip - to take on Medicine Hat on Saturday - was cancelled, handing the top-ranked Sun Devils another W.

"We just had too many sick bodies. Even the sick guys we thought were going to be able to go (Sunday) weren't able to. They tried, but it was a problem."
