Mitch Gillis of Williams Lake has advanced to the second stage of PGA Tour qualifying school after shooting one-under 71 in the final round of Stage 1 in Beaumont, Calif., on Saturday.
Gillis made four birdies and three bogeys and finished right on the number — he tied for 21st, with the top 23 and ties moving on to Stage 2 of Q-School. Gillis’s four-round total was even-par 288.
Gillis will play in the second stage from Nov. 15-18 in one of three locations — Brooksville, Fla., Humble, Texas, or McKinney, Texas. The final stage is scheduled for Nov. 30 to Dec. 5 in La Quinta, Calif.
Lindsay Wilson, an Australian living in Montreal, won the stage, shooting 275.

Josh Hozack of Victoria won the Rick Cotter Junior Cashspiel Sunday at McArthur Island Curling Club.
Hozack beat fellow Victoria Curling Club curler Daniel Wenzek 9-2 in six ends in the final. Hozack, third Cory Chester, second Nolan Reid and lead Zac Capron earned $1,500 for winning, while Wenzek, third Cameron Dejong, second Sanjay Bowry and lead Thomas Thierback took home $1,000 for second.
Kamloops’ Corryn Brown lost to Hozack in a semifinal, but won $500.

The South Kamloops Titans beat the Kelowna-Okanagan Mission Huskies 49-20 in an Okanagan varsity football game Friday at Hillside Stadium.
Blaine Boomer was terrific for the Titans, scoring two rushing touchdowns and passing for three others. He hit Spencer Hamer-Jackson for two scores, and also connected with Jacob Adams.
Tye Desrosier had a punt return touchdown in the victory, and Drew Weafer also scored a 34-yard rushing touchdown. Linebacker Todd Grant helped the defence with nine tackles and Adams had seven.
South Kam now is 3-3, but won’t make the playoffs. The Titans will finish their season on Friday against the Valleyview Vikings at Hillside Stadium.
