Is that a new doggie park?

    Catherine Litt

New fencing surrounds a corner lot at Ninth Street and Westminster Avenue. The Shores Retirement Residence, seen in the background, began beautifying the property about two months ago. It will become a private park for the seniors.

YOU ASKED: I'm curious to what is going on at Ninth Street and Westminster Avenue on the North Shore. Is it a private green space (brown) or perhaps another doggie park? The fencing is very nice!

    — Barb A.

OUR ANSWER: That huge lot is located beside The Shores Retirement Residence and, we agree, the fencing is probably the most attractive chain-link fencing we’ve seen.

It went up about two months ago, said Jillian Chisholm, executive director of The Shores.

Chisholm knows a lot about the property and for good reason — it’s owned by the same company that owns and operates The Shores, PrimeTime Living.

“It had been overgrown for quite some time and the owners have recently decided that it needed some beautification,” said Chisholm, “and that our residents would quite like to use it as a park.”

The snowfall obscures the work that was started about two months ago but Chisholm tells us the corner lot has been shaped and graded. Its healthy trees were left standing, including a large willow that needed some trimming. A walking path was installed around the property.

In the spring, landscapers will seed the grass, adding the final touch to the greenspace.

“So it will be something quite beautiful,” said Chisholm.

The Shores seniors are already an active group. They go on outings and walks all over the city. This park will give them a chance to stay active closer to home, if they choose, and to host picnics and celebrations, said Chisholm.

“This is really going to be a party spot,” she said.

Decorative plans include the hanging of patio lanterns.
