High Schools: Titans winners at Maple Ridge tourney

Despite only dressing six players in the championship final, the South Kamloops Titans won a senior girls basketball tournament in Maple Ridge.

The Titans opened with a 38-36 victory over the Maple Ridge Ramblers in a game featuring the top two Grade 11 prospects in Canada - South Kam's Emma Wolfram and Maple Ridge's Kolbie Orum, both national cadet team players.

Wolfram had 14 points and nine rebounds in her return from a concussion, while Abby Grinberg scored nine points, player of the game Madi Ellis added eight and Maya Olynyk had seven. Kiersten Landrie chipped in with eight rebounds and four steals.

Wolfram had 18 points and 11 rebounds as South Kam beat the Victoria-Claremont Spartans, 63-57. Hailey Hamer-Jackson, the player of the game, had 17 points and seven rebounds, and Grinberg had 11 points and five steals. Ellis also had 10 points and Landrie grabbed eight more rebounds.

Missing four regulars, the Titans beat the Victoria-Mount Douglas Rams 68-34 in the final. South Kam was missing Grinberg, who was injured in a semifinal, Bethany Del Begio, who has a broken finger, and Ashley Lamoureux and Sienna Aberdeen, who didn't make the trip west.

Wolfram had 22 points and 21 rebounds to lead the way, with player of the game Landrie scoring 19 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Olynyk had 11 points, Ellis had nine and Hamer-Jackson scored seven. Elizabeth Anderson had seven rebounds.

The St. Ann's Crusaders beat the Valleyview Vikings 52-38 in the final of a NorKam junior boys basketball tournament.

Michael Mayhew had 21 points and eight assists to lead the Crusaders, and Dylan Marshall had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jeremy Laquindanum also had 14 points in the victory.

The Crusaders topped the Kelowna-Okanagan Mission Huskies and the Lytton-Kumsheen Cougars on their way to the final, while the Vikings dropped the host Saints and the Westsyde Whundas in their earlier games.

The South Kamloops Titans senior boys basketball team split its games at the East Side Exhibition Series at UBC in Vancouver on the weekend.

The Titans opened with a 72-58 victory over the North Delta Huskies on Friday. Spencer Jaroszuk had 28 points to lead South Kam, and Elijah Hillis-Gold scored 15. Jacob Adams, with 13 points, and Kyle Klysoon, with 12, also had big games.

South Kam lost its next game in double overtime, 68-64 to the Vancouver-Sir Charles Tupper Tigers on Saturday. Jaroszuk had 28 points and 18 rebounds, while Hillis-Gold poured in 27 points.

South Kam, which is 10-4, is scheduled to play host to the Penticton Lakers in a league game Saturday.

The Valleyview Vikings rolled to the title at the Pleasant Valley Snoball senior boys basketball tournament in Armstrong on the weekend.

The Vikings opened with a 53-36 victory over the AAA Salmon Arm Golds. William Konken and Clayton Farber each scored 12 points in the victory.

The Vikings dropped the host Saints 79-66 in a semifinal, with Farber scoring 22 points and Scott Bjorkland adding 16. Chris McCarthy also scored 15 points in the victory.

Farber had 17 points as the Vikings dropped the Penticton-Princess Margaret Mustangs 67-63 in the final. Bjorkland also had 13 points and Tim Bientjes scored nine.

Valleyview is scheduled to play league games against the St. Ann's Crusaders today and the Westsyde Whundas on Wednesday.

The South Kamloops Titans finished 3-1 in a Grade 8 girls basketball tournament at Kettle Valley Middle School in Penticton on the weekend.

The Titans opened the round-robin event with a 42-30 victory over the Penticton-Skaha Lake Sharks. Lynn Morrison had 13 points for the winners, and Hannah McDonald scored 10.

South Kamloops lost 46-31 to the Kelowna-K.L.O. Cougars. Morrison had seven points, and Audrey Marshall scored six for the Titans.

Morrison had 11 points in South Kam's next game, a 26-17 victory over the host Express. McDonald and Tamiko Tallio each scored six points for the winners.

The Titans went on to drop the Chilliwack-Rosedale Ravens 39-29. Morrison and McDonald each scored seven points, and Brooke Bazian and Katherine Reid had six apiece.

The Titans are to play the Sabres at Sa-Hali on Wednesday.
