Curling: Small field, strong field for wheelchair playdown

World and Paralympic champions will be among those competing in the B.C. Wheelchair Curling Championship, which runs Saturday and Sunday at McArthur Island Curling Club.

The championship will be a best-of-three final between two rinks — Darryl Neighbour of Richmond and Surrey’s Gary Cormack.

They will open Saturday, 9 a.m., before playing again at 2 p.m. There will be an opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Should the teams split the opening draws, the winner-take-all third game is scheduled for Sunday, 10 a.m.

This weekend’s champion will represent B.C. at the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship in Thunder Bay from March 18-25.

The Neighbour rink comprises the skip, Sonja Gaudet of Vernon, Kelowna’s Gerry Austgarden and Victoria’s Corinne Jensen.

Neighbour and Gaudet won gold medals at the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver, as they played on Jim Armstrong’s championship team. Neighbour also won world championships in 2009 and 2010, while Gaudet was a world champion in 2009 and 2011.

Gaudet also won gold at the 2006 Paralympics in Turin, Italy, along with Austgarden. Jensen was a national champion in 2010.

Cormack’s rink features Frank LaBounty, Bob MacDonald and Allison Duddy.

Cormack, the defending provincial champion, was a Canadian champion in 2006 and 2010, and curled with Austgarden and Gaudet on the 2006 Paralympic gold medal-winning rink.

LaBounty, from Prince George, won Canadian championships with Armstrong’s rink in 2007, 2008 and 2009, along with provincial gold medals in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

MacDonald, from Surrey, skipped a team to silver at last year’s provincial championship. Duddy, from Quesnel, was on the Cormack rink that won the B.C. title in Kimberley in 2011.

Across town at the Tournament Capital Centre, the Pius McGuinness Memorial wheelchair basketball tournament will run Saturday and Sunday.

The tournament will feature teams from Kamloops, Vancouver, Langley, Kelowna and Tacoma, Wash. Action starts Saturday at 9 a.m., and Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
