Stayin' Alive! WolfPack women's basketball team in hunt for playoff spot

The TRU WolfPack women's basketball team has put itself in very good position to make the Canada West postseason for the first time.

The WolfPack beat the Trinity Western Spartans 66-61 in Langley on Saturday. TRU had beaten the Spartans 76-58 on Friday night as well.

The sweep leaves the WolfPack at 7-9 heading into its final weekend of the regular season - a home-and-home set with the UBC-Okanagan Heat (2-14). Saturday's game will be played at the Tournament Capital Centre (5 p.m.), with Sunday's rematch in Kelowna.

Eight teams will make the Canada West postseason - the top three finishers in the Pacific Division and the top four from the Prairie Division, along with the next best finisher.

Although the WolfPack is fifth in the Pacific Division, its remaining schedule appears to be easier than the teams above it.

The third-place Victoria Vikes (8-8), will go home-and-home with the UBC Thunderbirds (13-3) on Friday and Feb. 17, while the fourth-place Spartans (8-9) will finish against the visiting Fraser Valley Cascades (11-6) on Thursday.

In order to finish third in the Pacific Division, the WolfPack will have to sweep UBC-O and hope the Vikes go winless. If TRU finishes tied with Trinity Western, the WolfPack would get the tiebreaker based on head-to-head results.

The WolfPack shot 47 per cent from three-point land - and 46 per cent overall - in Saturday's victory.

Jen Ju led the way with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Diane Schuetze had 18 points and eight rebounds. Taiysa Worsfold contributed 12 points off the bench, Kaitlyn Widsten scored 11 points and Jorri Duxbury had 10 points to go along with nine assists.

Holly Strom had 18 points for TWU, and Tiffany Olsen scored 14.

The WolfPack men's basketball team lost 97-92 to the Spartans in Langley on Saturday to fall to 5-11.

TRU will finish its season with a home game against the Heat on Saturday and a road game in Kelowna on Sunday.

Justin King had 29 points and eight rebounds for the WolfPack, while Chas Kok poured in 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Kevin Pribilsky added 12 points, while Akeem Pierre scored 10.

Sean Peter had 27 points to lead Trinity Western, Calvin Westbrook had 19 points and Tristan Smith and Kurtis Osborne each scored 17. Niko Monachini added 10 points for the Spartans (10-7).

The WolfPack women's volleyball team is officially in playoff position after the Brandon Bobcats lost in three sets to the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver on Saturday.

TRU and Brandon are tied for the final playoff spot at 8-10, but the WolfPack holds the tiebreaker based on its sweep of the Bobcats last month.

The WolfPack had a bye weekend, but will finish its regular season with matches against the Heat (5-13) in Kelowna on Friday and Saturday. If TRU wins twice or Brandon loses twice - or both split - the WolfPack will qualify for the playoffs for the first time.

Jose Reyes scored twice in the final 10 minutes to lead the WolfPack to a 5-4 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League victory over Simon Fraser University at Memorial Arena on Friday.

Reyes scored with 9:34 remaining to tie the game, and again on a power play with 5:54 to go. David Gore had three assists, Shane Oatway had a goal and two helpers, and Andrew Fisher and Casey Patterson also scored for the WolfPack. Shane Mainprize made 24 saves.

Jono Ceci, with two, Ben Van Lare and Colton Graf had goals for SFU, Christopher Hoe had three assists and Van Lare had two helpers. Evan Kurylo had 39 saves in the loss.

The WolfPack is scheduled to play in Victoria on Saturday and Sunday.
