Target to open doors in spring 2013

There is now a tentative Target date set for the Kamloops Zellers store.

Target will open its doors at the Sahali Centre Mall retail space in spring 2013.

Company spokesperson Lisa Gibson said Friday that Target isn’t responsible for the Zellers closing.

But, typically, the former store shuts down six to nine months before Target opens so that significant remodelling can be done, she said.

“You can expect the true Target brand experience when the doors open in spring, 2013. That means innovative products and design partnerships at affordable prices, a clean, easy-to-navigate store with superior guest service,” she said.

The deal to take over Zellers only involves real estate, she said.

“There isn’t a transfer of technology, systems or employees,” said Gibson. Target bought the leasehold interest in Zellers stores across Canada.

“We are expecting to hire between 150 and 200 team members to work in each store. In many cases that is double the number of Zellers stores. Hiring for these positions will begin late 2012.”

Target’s plans include opening 125 to 135 stores in Canada, most of them in 2013. The company estimates each Zellers renovation will cost $10 million to $11 million.
