Elderly woman dies after being struck crossing street

An elderly woman struck by a vehicle on Tranquille Road last week succumbed to her injuries in hospital on Saturday.

Around 11:40 a.m. Friday, a lone driver in a vehicle struck 77-year-old Rosina Spina as she crossed Tranquille Road at 12th Street.

According to a police report, traffic was stopped at a red light on Tranquille and 12th, and when the light turned green, the victim stepped out to cross Tranquille without noticing the traffic was moving.

"The driver proceeding on the green light, saw the pedestrian step onto the road and attempted to stop, but struck the woman who then fell hitting her head," states the report.

"At this point in the investigation it appears that the pedestrian caused the collision by stepping into traffic without looking."

Alcohol was not a factor, said RCMP Staff Sgt. Quintin Smith. No charges have been laid.

"We're conducting a mechanical inspection on the vehicle," said Quintin. "We've called in a traffic analyst to examine the scene, so we're still looking at all those aspects."
