OUT ANSWER: For this answer, we went to Greg Luison, the City of Kamloops’ streets supervisor.
Luison says about 8,000 tons of the salt/sand mixture was spread throughout Kamloops this winter. (The mixture is mostly sand, with three-per cent salt). That’s roughly 80 dump trucks worth.
The City recycles about 60 per cent of it every second year to be mixed with new salt and sand for the following season.
“If we reused it every year, we would end up with very dirty sand, and very dusty sand,” sand Luison.
“But we try to reuse as much of it as we can.”
