Where does that road salt mixture go?

    Catherine Litt

A City of Kamloops street sweeper makes its way along a road in Juniper Ridge on Tuesday. The City tries to recycle as much of the sand as possible.

YOU ASKED: The City workers are currently cleaning our streets — sweeping up the salt/sand spread on the street to make them safe this past winter. What do they do with the salt/sand? Reuse next year? Landfill? Or?

    —Greg Marshall

OUT ANSWER: For this answer, we went to Greg Luison, the City of Kamloops’ streets supervisor.

Luison says about 8,000 tons of the salt/sand mixture was spread throughout Kamloops this winter. (The mixture is mostly sand, with three-per cent salt). That’s roughly 80 dump trucks worth.

The City recycles about 60 per cent of it every second year to be mixed with new salt and sand for the following season.

“If we reused it every year, we would end up with very dirty sand, and very dusty sand,” sand Luison.

“But we try to reuse as much of it as we can.”
