The Great Canadian Bike Rally will receive another $10,000 gold-level sponsorship from the City of Merritt this year, but not all of that support will necessarily come in cash.
Council voted to grant the rally's request Tuesday.
Coun. Mike Goetz said events require time and help before they are profitable and independent. "I think we need to support this as we have done others."
Coun. Dave Baker agreed to give $10,000 in assistance, but said that figure should include in-kind donations, such as waiving rental fees for the Merritt Civic Centre.
"One of the biggest problems is cash flow at the outset," city chief administrative officer Matt Noble noted. "Definitely, this is an issue to them."
Councillors Harry Kroeker and Clara Norgaard opposed the sponsorship.
Norgaard said the rally should not rely on public funds to meet its budget.
