Olympic swimmer Tanya Hunks will be directing a Future Stars Swimming Camp at the Tournament Capital Centre on the weekend.
Hunks, who was on the 2008 Canadian Olympic swim team and won a bronze medal at the 2007 Pan-American Games, will direct 30 local swimmers at the TCC’s Canada Games Aquatic Centre. The clinic will start today and end Sunday.
There will be a meet-and-greet event with Hunks, who holds the Canadian record in the 400-metre Individual Medley, on Saturday, 1 p.m., at the TCC lobby.

Kamloops cross-country skier Joey Burton is one of 50 Canadian athletes to receive a grant from Petro-Canada’s Fuelling Athlete and Coaching Excellence (FACE) program.
Burton will earn $8,000 to help his cross-country career. The FACE program, according toa press release, “provides developing (pre-carded) Canadian athlete and coach pairings with $8,000 in grants. These resources go a long way in helping athletes achieve national carded status and coaches improve their skills over the long term.”

The Kamloops Blazers helped contribute more than $132,000 in donations to community partners and local organizations during the 2011-12 WHL season, according to a team press release.
The club’s staff and players also contributed a total of 435 hours of community service.
The Blazers donated 1,100 tickets to the Kamloops Minor Hockey Association during the season, and also donated more than $17,000 to Interior Community Services. The Blazers held Pink Powerplay Night, November Stache Bash and Jersey Off Our Backs Night.

Robert Gill has been named instructor of the month for April by Taekwondo Times, an international magazine.
Gill is a fifth degree dan black belt instructor at Thompson Valley Taekwon-do. He has been involved in the sport for 38 years and instructing in Kamloops for the past 25 years.

The labour dispute between the B.C. government and the teachers has led to the cancellation of the provincial high school golf championships.
B.C. School Sports, which governs high school athletics, was to hold three provincial golf championships — the AAA event, for the biggest schools, was to be held in Courtenay, with the AA championship to go in Shawnigan Lake and A event in Osoyoos. All of those championships would have run the last weekend of May.
Around 500 students are expected to be affected.
The B.C. Teachers’ Federation voted last week to support a union ban on extracurricular activites in protest of the government’s Bill 22, which, among other things, bans strikes.
