The Merritt Barbarians men's rugby team won their first game of the season Sunday by beating the West Kelowna Grizzles 27-10, the team's first ever road victory.
"As both teams were short on numbers, a 12-on-12 game was played instead of the traditional 15 aside," said team spokesman Nathan Brigden.
Eric Schmidt and Darris Routley scored two tries each while Cody Schindler, Jonathan Cooke, and Sam Carroll added single tries.
"The Merritt forwards were able to recycle the ball cleanly and quickly for their backs, and the team supported each other all over the field," said Brigden, noting that Merritt's experience was a large factor in the victory.
"While it was great to get the first victory, we know that we will have a greater challenge in Vernon against the defending champions this coming Saturday."
Last season, Vernon went undefeated; however, they are 0-2 to start this season.
The Barbarians will host the Penticton Harlequins May 5 at Voght Park. Game time is 1 p.m.
