The Kamloops Youth Soccer Association will again pay tribute to a local soccer icon with its Mike Bartram memorial Tournament on the weekend.
Bartram, a central figure in the growth of soccer in Kamloops, passed away in 2000.
The tournament, for teams in the under-11 to under-18 divisions, will run Friday through Monday at fields around Kamloops. Around 90 boys and girls teams will compete.

The Kamloops Heat will open the Pacific Coast Soccer League men’s reserve division season on the coast this weekend.
The Heat, which is coached by TRU WolfPack co-coaches John Antulov and Sean Wallace, is scheduled to play the TSS Academy in Vancouver on Saturday and West Vancouver FC in Vancouver on Sunday.
The Heat’s home-opener is scheduled for May 26 against the Mid-Isle Highlanders at Hillside Stadium.

Nine local sport leaders will be honoured on May 16 as Sport B.C. Community Sport Heroes.
The individuals will be honoured at an award ceremony at the Coast Hotel Convention Centre.
“The Community Sport Hero Awards are a celebration of volunteers who have contributed eight or more years to sport,” said Carey Summerfelt, Event Manager of Sport B.C., in a news release. “Sport is crucial to the development of strong, healthy communities, and community volunteers, like the (nine) scheduled to be honoured, are essential to that success.”
Cycling’s Henry Pejril, multisport volunteer Larry Read, basketball’s Rob Steenson and Sheri Lincoln, Chris Taylor of canoe/kayak, Lance Jang of Action Schools, lacrosse’s Beau and Ellie Bradley and skating’s Cheyenne Irving.

A former Kamloops junior has been named the top player of his decade in a fan poll conducted by the B.C. Hockey League.
The BCHL, a junior A league, is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and had the fans vote on the top players of the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and 2000s.
Bob Nystrom of the Kamloops Rockets was named the top player of the 1960s, beating another former Rockets forward, Eric Shishido.
Goaltender Andy Moog, who played for the Kamloops Braves and his hometown Penticton Vees, was runner-up for the top player of the 1970s, which went to Penticton Broncos forward Chad Campbell.
Mark Recchi of Kamloops, who was a forward for the Langley Eagles, finished second in the 1980s behind forward Brett Hull of the Penticton Knights.
Paul Kariya, a forward for the Penticton Panthers, was named the top player of the ’90s, while goaltender Brad Thiessen, who played for the Panthers/Vees, Prince George Spruce Kings and Merritt Centennials, was best in the 2000s.
