One of three suspects involved in a hammer attack in Mission has an extensive criminal history in Kamloops and the Interior dating back for more than a decade.

Matthew Joel Bouwknecht, 28, was sentenced in a Chilliwack Supreme Court on Wednesday to six months time after pleading guilty to assault.

Bouwknecht was originally charged with unlawful confinement, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon for an incident took place in Mission on Dec. 1, 2010, when RCMP discovered a 24-year-old Abbotsford man bound with zap straps and badly beaten on the 36000 block of the Lougheed Highway.

The victim was beaten with a hammer and lying in the middle of the highway suffering from back, head and facial injuries. Investigators later determined he had been attacked in the basement of a nearby home.

Bouwknecht is no stranger to police or the court system in Kamloops, with incidents dating back to 2002 when he appeared on a charge of assault with intent to resist arrest in April of that year.

He’s appeared a half dozen times since on charges of assault with a weapon, kidnapping, unlawful confinement or imprisonment, breach of an undertaking, failure to stop at an accident and obstructing a police officer.

Bouwknect has also ended up in courtrooms in Kelowna, Vernon and Penticton, 100 Mile House and Williams Lake charged with a variety of offences ranging from possession of stolen property to flight from a police officer and driving while prohibited.

One of Bouwknecht's co-accused, Dustin Dale Braaten, has already been convicted of aggravated assault in the Mission hammer attack. Braaten got 10 months behind bars on Jan. 30.

A third co-accused, Loni Fisher, has also been charged in the case and is scheduled to start trial on May 28.
