Countless musicians have been inspired by the British pop sensation The Beatles and likely just as many have dreamt of playing alongside John, Paul, George and Ringo.

For a group of four accomplished U.K. performers, the dream of being a Beatle has come to vivid life, allowing them to not only play the classic band’s music, but also become their idols.

“It’s an absolute passion for us,” Joe Kane, who embodies Paul McCartney, said during a phone interview from Glasgow, Scotland.

The show, Beatlemania: The Beatles Experience comes to Kamloops June 20 at The Sagebrush Theatre as part of a 13-city western Canada tour.

In addition to Kane, Beatlemania is Craig McGowan (George Harrison), Grahame Critcher (Ringo Starr) and Clark Gilmour (John Lennon). The show has toured the world during its three years, having recently wrapped up gigs in South Africa.

This is the first time during Beatlemania’s current incarnation that the show has come to Canada. Kane said he and his fellow performers look forward to playing on Canadian soil.

“It’s a big thrill for us to come and play Beatles music over there,” he said.

Beatlemania explores The Beatles’ revolution in popular music and culture by employing authentic looking instruments, amplifiers and costumes coupled with faithful renditions of fans favourite songs.

He said some Beatles’ tribute acts have a couple of look-a-likes and play the music. Beatlemania takes everything one-step further.

“We try and give people the essence of The Beatles and everything about The Beatles, the character and humour as well as their music,” said Kane. “We try and make them believe.”

The show starts when The Beatles first went to Hamburg, Germany, and follows the band’s storied history through the psychedelic era, the studio years and finishes with the final public performance on the roof of the Apple building in London, England, on Jan. 30, 1969.

Kane said there are several dramatic sequences between songs, creating a comprehensive history of the legendary act.

“We try to cover all the excitement.”

Every performer is an accomplished musician in his own right, and every one a Beatles fan. He said making a career out of being a Beatle and playing their songs is indeed a dream job.

“I have to pinch myself every day to make sure I’m not dreaming,” said Kane.
