Council gives nod to Carl’s Jr. to post variance notice

City council voted unanimously Tuesday to authorize distribution of notice of intent for Carl’s Jr.’s plans to decrease the width of its driving aisle.

The change would shave the aisle down from 4.3 metres to 3.9 metres.

The narrowing will allow the burger joint, which has plans to move into the former Malibu Restaurant in Valleyview, to include a drive-thru window.

Eric Lai, who owns the Arby’s restaurant next door, said he has had customers from other restaurants parking in his spaces in the past.

He asked council if Carl’s will have enough parking on site for its own customers.

City community development manager Randy Lambright said the current restaurant capacity is 68, and Carl’s is reducing that to 64 to meet the 20 required parking stalls on site.

Lai said he may consider a fence, but wants to talk to his landlord first.

Coun. Pat Wallace asked if he had signs posted saying Arby’s parking only. Lai said he did, but thought perhaps there weren’t enough signs.

Coun. Ken Christian said his one concern was the traffic that backs up at intersections along the frontage road overall, not the particular application before council.

    Coun. Donovan Cavers was absent.
