Smith back at it after giving birth

Kamloops hammer thrower Crystal Smith is back training, less than three weeks after giving birth to a daughter.

Smith and husband Kibwé Johnson, also a hammer thrower, welcomed baby Brooklyn on April 18. Both baby and mother are healthy.

But Smith, who is training in hopes of qualifying for August’s London Olympics, has barely missed a beat. She continued to practise into the final weeks of her pregnancy, and resumed training Monday.

The Canadian athletics championships are scheduled for June 27-30 in Calgary. They will serve as the Olympic qualifier.

Johnson will take part in the U.S. Olympic team trials in Eugene, Ore., at the end of June.
