The long weekend started early for the RCMP patrolling the Lake Koocanusa area.
The Elk Valley RCMP reported that a lot of people started arriving at the lake yesterday evening, and police have already made two significant drug seizures, as well as multiple alcohol confiscations, have towed a number of defective vehicles, particularly trailers, and have issued one three day immediate roadside prohibition.
“We have been busy so far, and it's only going to get busier,” said Dave Dubnyk from the Elk Valley RCMP.
“We have roadblocks set up throughout the weekend, and will be patrolling the camping areas in quads.
“We just want to make sure people coming down with their families to enjoy the beautiful surroundings can have a pleasant, safe environment to do so.”
Dubnyk said they have seen a lot of underage drinking, and also people driving around with open alcohol.
He did not have any information on the two drug seizures, but said they were from two separate vehicles, and one was hash while the other was marijuana.
A police dog is patrolling the area for illegal drugs and the BC Sheriffs are also on site with a portable cell block and a breathalyzer.
“We are in for a busy weekend,” said Daubnyk.
