What’s shaping up to be a quiet weekend in the city could prove a busy one for police and surrounding campgrounds.

The only event of note in Kamloops takes place at the B.C. Wildlife Park, where families are invited to enjoy the usual assortment of festive activities, including bouncy castles, paintball and the park’s miniature train, for all three days.

Juno Award winner performer Peter Puffin will perform at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. throughout the weekend.

Most people who aren’t putting in their gardens will likely head to the Shuswap or other nearby lakes. With that in mind, RCMP are planning on a typical weekend in town, said Staff Sgt. Grant Learned.

“We’re not anticipating anything out of context or out of control,” he said Friday. “We will have the usual contingent of officers on duty.”

People have already hit the Shuswap in full force, with the provincial campground at Scotch Creek booked solid and sites at other recreation destinations quickly filling up.

“It’s going to be busy,” said Chase RCMP Sgt. Gary Heebner.

He said officers will make their presence known on the lake and roads. He wants people to know that a rowdy weekend will not be tolerated.

“We want this to be a safe and enjoyable weekend for everybody,” said Heebner.

Police remind boaters no one is allowed to be on the water without lifejackets, a bucket or a bilge pump to bail water, a ladder and floating line. He said anyone who pilots a boat needs a valid boating licence and must be sober.

About 5,000 people are expected to enjoy the 94th Falkland Stampede. The field across from the rodeo grounds had already filled with campers Friday afternoon, said Jackie Piper, who is in charge of parade entries.

“It’s a very big event,” she said.

The rodeo begins at 1 p.m. today and Monday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Piper said the annual parade starts at 1 p.m. Sunday and will close Highway 97 for about an hour.
