Highway crash sends man to hospital; horses in trailer OK

    Murray Mitchell

B.C. Ambulance paramedics and Kamloops Fire Rescue members wheel a man to a waiting ambulance at a crash site in Westwold Thursday afternoon. The ambulance transported the seriously injured man to a nearby helicopter for transport to hospital. The car collided with a three-quarter-ton truck pulling a loaded horse trailer. The collision closed Highway 97 in both directions for at least an hour.

A man is in hospital after his car collided with a truck pulling a horse trailer along Highway 97 at Westwold Thursday afternoon.

At about 2:20 p.m., a blue Dodge Ram truck pulling two horses in a trailer hit a Pontiac Grand Am on the highway near the Royal Canadian Legion.

An air ambulance was called in to carry away the Grand Am driver, who was alone in the car. The helicopter took the injured man to Royal Inland Hospital.

"He was airlifted because it's quite a distance to either hospital," said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gordon Molendyk. "And when we call an air ambulance, it's serious injuries."

The male driver and female passenger in the truck were not injured, according to Molendyk.

The animals were "scraped up" but otherwise "fine," he said.

Traffic was diverted to one-lane alternating vehicles for the duration of the afternoon while investigators assessed the site of the crash.

The cause of the accident is still undetermined.

The police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident or who arrived shortly thereafter to contact Vernon RCMP at 250 545-7171.
