One in three Canadians know someone with Alzheimer's disease - and the number is projected to skyrocket over the next decade.

To help Kamloops residents better understand the health implications, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. will run a free workshop on June 12.

"Participants will receive basic information on dementia and the impact it has on the individual, their care partners, and their support network," explains Tara Hildebrand, the society's support and education co-ordinator for Kamloops and area.

Getting to Know Dementia will lend an opportunity to learn about the diagnosis, different programs and services available in the community, the importance of planning for the future, and strategies for living well.

People with a diagnosis of dementia, care partners and family members are all invited to attend.

The workshop runs from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Alzheimer Society of B.C. Resource Centre, 405-235 First Ave. Pre-registration is required, by calling 250-377-8200 or e-mailing thildebrand@alzheimerbc.org.
