Tie breaks ombudsman

Merritt City Council

The City of Merritt council had its first tie vote Tuesday, defeating a motion for a local, independent official to investigate complaints against the city.

The city's policy and bylaw review committee had recommended creating an independent review officer, or ombudsman, for resolving complaints about local administration.

Couns. Harry Kroeker, Alastair Murdoch, and Clara Norgaard voted against the motion, while Mayor Susan Roline, and Couns. Dave Baker and Mike Goetz voted for it.

Tuesday's meeting was the council's first since former councillor Norm Brigden's resignation took effect. His departure has left only six council members until his seat is filled in September.
