A man was sent to hospital after a hailstorm brought down dozens of trees on campers and their vehicles at a Boss-Davis Lakes recreation site near Merritt Saturday evening.

Strong winds brought down between 30 and 40 trees at the recreation site, located on Voght Valley Road south of Merritt, crushing vehicles and blocking access to emergency crews, who had to send an air ambulance to rescue the man.

The unidentified man was flown to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, where he received treatment for undisclosed injuries.

"The extent of the damage to vehicles and campers is unknown, but no other injuries were reported," said Merritt RCMP Const. Tracy Dunsmore Monday.

Several agencies attended the scene, including firefighters, who assisted with chainsaws to clear the roads.

After a rainy and cool weekend in Merritt, Environment Canada forecasts a mix of sun and clouds with lows of 8 and highs of 26 through to Friday.

B.C.'s River Forecast Centre has issued several flood warnings across the province but none for the Nicola and Coldwater Rivers in Merritt.
