Bouvette seeks assessment of mental condition

The woman accused of murdering a 19-month-old Cranbrook girl appeared in court on June 25 to ask for an assessment of her mental condition relating to newly emerged charges of robbery.

Tammy Bouvette appeared via video link to request an assessment order that will determine her mental condition at the time of the commission of the alleged offence which is dated December 2011. Bouvette is charged with robbery and disguising face with intent to commit an offence.

The assessment will be conducted over the next two months, and will determine if Bouvette is fit to stand trial on the two charges, and whether she was suffering from a mental condition that would exempt her from criminal responsibility. She will appear again in Cranbrook Provincial Court on August 20.

The Crown did not object to the request. Counsel William Throne, who spoke for Bouvette but has yet to be retained, said his client is extremely stressed and requested the assessment order be extended past the usual 30 days, requesting the August date for the matter to return to court. It was extended to 60 days.

The B.C. Sheriffs service advised the court that Bouvette will be appearing in person on August 28 on another matter, and could appear in court in person if the date were slated around then. It was decided that the August 20 date would be best, and she would appear via video link again.

Bouvette is also charged with second-degree murder after the death of 19-month-old Iyanna Teeple. Iyanna drowned on May 26 last year while Bouvette was babysitting her.
