Website created to raise money for Sorrento family

Sorrento residents have set up a donation website to assist a family devastated by a deadly accident on a Saskatchewan highway.

Kelly Lazar said the website helpthisfamilynow.com has already raised $1,000 toward an initial goal of $5,000.

Father Doug, as well as daughters Alli, 19, and Cassidy, 13, were killed in a June 10 crash when the family car was passing a semi-trailer truck on a rainy highway and hit an oncoming SUV.

Mother Patty Janzen and 16-year-old son Cody survived the accident. The SUV's driver, 30-year-old Ryan Bridger of Plato, Sask., died of his injuries three days later. The SUV's 56-year-old male passenger survived.

The Janzens are a longtime Sorrento family. Lazar is an elementary school teacher who taught both Cody and Cassidy.

She said she was inspired by a news report of a school bus monitor in New York state who was tormented by children. A Toronto man appalled by the video posted online by one of the students on the bus raised more than $600,000 for her through a crowd-funding website.

“We did this to give people an idea of what happened,” she said.

The money will go to the Janzen family, who are left without income.

Patty is recovering from an induced coma following the crash.
