    submitted

Mason LeVasseur flies through the air en route to winning the long jump.

Mason LeVasseur, a first-year Kamloops Track and Field Club athlete, came home from a weekend pentathlon meet in South Surrey with a silver medal.

LeVasseur, 9, finished with 1,609 points in the five events, winding up only seven points back of Chilliwack’s Brandt Lenz.
LeVasseur took second in the first event, the 60-metre hurdles, finishing in 11.58 seconds, 0.06 behind Vancouver’s Xavier Kristen.

Lenz won the second event, the shot put, with a heave of 6.18m. LeVasseur was second at 5.72m.

LeVasseur came through to win the next two events — his high jump of 1.10m left him tied for first with Surrey’s Harjoven Sidhu, before a gold-medal long jump of 3.35m.

LeVasseur led Lenz by 50 points heading into the final competition — the 600m. Kristen ended up winning the race with a possible meet record time of 1:58:63, with Lenz second in 2:00.11.

LeVasseur was third in 2:05.12, but didn’t get enough points to stay ahead of Lenz.

Kristen finished third overall with 1,432 points.
