Are we getting a bigger movie theatre?

    Catherine Litt

Angela McIvor, right, waits outside the Cineplex Odeon with Starr and Justin Tighe. On the board behind them, multiple start times reflect the popularity of two new movies and the reality that the theatre's eight screens can only handle a limited number of showings each day. Company officials say there are no plans to expand the theatre.

YOU ASKED: There was a rumour a few years back on the Cineplex theatre in town expanding to a 10-plex. It seems those plans have been on hold for a while now. Any word on whether it's still going to happen?

    — Thanks, Adam

OUR ANSWER: You’re right, there was talk of expansion in 2009 but that never made it beyond some initial discussions with City council.

The company had gone to council in October of that year to ask for a reconfiguration of its parking allotment at Aberdeen Mall, which would allow for the addition of two theatre screens (the expansion was expected to eat up 38 parking spots).

But according to Cineplex Entertainment’s director of communications, Mike Langdon, there are no longer any plans to expand. He could not comment on previous discussions.

The movie house opened in 1999 as an eight-screen facility.

“That number is consistent with many other theatres we operate in markets of a similar size,” said Langdon.

Of course, eight screens never seem to be enough on opening weekends for highly anticipated movies.

Take the new Batman film The Dark Knight Rises as an example.

It opens on Friday with 10 showings staggered from noon to 11 p.m. in order to accommodate what is expected to be a rush on ticket sales.
