A Merritt newspaper with a 21-year history in the community will shut its doors next month.
Glacier Media Group, which also operates The Daily News in Kamloops, said the free-circulation weekly newspaper is no longer financially viable and has been operating at a loss for some time.
It will publish its final edition Aug 2. Five full-time employees, including two editorial staff, will lose their jobs.
The closure leaves the Merritt Herald, first published in 1905, as the only newspaper in the Nicola Valley.
The Merritt News got its start in 1991, when former Herald editor Susan Holmberg left to start a rival publication.
