Trying to scare us with the numbers

So I read the "They Say" in Wednesdays' paper about gun violence and was saddened to see that people are still trying to scare us about violent gun crimes.

The column states that in 2010 there were 170 homicides in Canada caused by guns and over 8,000 in the U.S.  While this is disturbing and can be scary it needs to be put into context with the rest of homicides.

A quick look at Stats Canada shows that there were 554 homicides in Canada in 2010. So for every three homicides by guns there were seven that were not by guns. No one ever shows this part of the numbers.

Researching back farther shows that in every year for the last 10 years more people are murdered by those not using a gun then by those using a gun.

Those of us who are responsible gun owners are tired of seeing this type of scare tactic used to stigmatize the entire gun industry.
